0309 - Offshore Services

Offshore Services promotes British Telecom International's communication services for the North Sea offshore industry, which requires specialist techniques due to the remote and challenging nature of the area. The film highlights the tropospheric scatter stations at Scousburgh and Mormond Hill that provide reliable communications links via aerials extending the full range of facilities available within the inland network out to the platforms. Due to high demand for telecoms traffic, a new satellite service called Satstream Offshore is being introduced, which will offer high-speed data up to 2 megabits and improved flexibility for serving rigs and production platforms at any position within the UK continental shelf waters. The film also features an example of a complex telecommunications job integrating offshore and inland services, such as the outside broadcast of Marathon Oil's Bray platform inauguration, which involved sound and vision being beamed from a satellite dish on the platform to London Telecom Tower via British Telecom's new earth station in North Woolwich. The final assembled programme was then sent to various locations including international TV networks in both the UK and the USA, as well as locally to Marathon in Aberdeen and Peterhead. The film concludes by emphasising that these communication needs are being confidently met by British Telecom's expertise.
