0234 - Beryl's Birthday

We open inside an entryway. An older woman named Beryl approaches her front door followed by a dog. She picks up a letter from the doormat. Beryl sighs and turns back inside the house. On her way past the stairs, Hoskins takes the letter from her hand. He tells us that Beryl doesn't look happy because it's her birthday and she hasn't received many greeting cards. He then tells us that this isn't what actually happened. We cut to a new scene of Beryl coming to her door to collect letters. This time there's a small pile of cards. Beryl smiles as she looks through them. We see a series of scenes where Beryl's daughters call their children to remind them to send cards to their grandmother and order flowers from a florist. Hoskins says he doesn't know why women make more calls than men, he suggests it's because they care more. He tells us that when they get on the phone, things seem to happen. Beryl is sitting in an armchair talking to her daughter on the phone. Beryl says that the flowers she received are beautiful and she received many cards. Hoskins: "It's good to talk".
