0229 - Soaps (social calling)

We open on an exposition shot of a residential street. Inside a house, a woman is watching a soap opera while doing ironing. Hoskins sits in a chair in front of the TV. He tells us that millions of us watch soaps every week because we're interested in other people and we like being part of a community. He stands up and goes to the window, lifting back the net curtains to look out at the street. He tells us that human life is happening outside. The phone rings and the woman picks it up. Hoskins instructs us to listen in. The caller is the woman's friend Joyce. They gossip and laugh. Hoskins tells us that it's more fun living in a soap than watching one. He says that ten minute calls cost less than a bar of soap. He brings a mug of tea to the woman on the phone. Hoskins: "It's good to talk".
