0216 - Not Talking for Long (revised)

We open inside a house. A man paces the room while reading a newspaper. He's on the phone to his mum but tells her he can't talk for long because he's going out to the cinema with his wife. His wife listens to conversation from the kitchen as she's cleaning up. Hoskins asks us if we've ever began a conversation by saying that we can't talk for long and to see how it feels from the other end. We cut to the man's mum making tea in her kitchen. Her phone rings and she answers excitedly when she hears her son's voice. She sits down to talk but after a moment sighs in disappointment. Hoskins asks us if we've ever listened to women on the phone. We cut back to the man's wife who's now on the phone to her mother-in-law. She asks her about a new dress. Hoskins says that this way of conversing is kinder and won't cost a lot in phone bills. He tells us to call at weekends when twenty minute calls cost less than a bottle of lager. We cut to the man on the phone to his mum again. This time he pays full attention to the call and asks about her dress. They laugh together. Hoskins: "It's good to talk".
