0219 - Missing the Train

We open in a busy train station. A man runs towards the platform. In a voice over, Hoskins tells us that we're in Milan. The man narrowly misses his train. He throws his briefcase to the ground in frustration. Hoskins comments that we know exactly how he's feeling. He then asks us to compare the Italian man's reaction with a British man's. We cut to a different man rushing to catch his train but also missing it. This man's reaction is more subdued. Hoskins comments on the man's shy temperament. He tells us that it may be fine to contain our feelings about missing trains but we should let them show when we miss other people. In the next scene, the British man arrives home. Opera music plays in the background. Hoskins tells us to pick up the phone and say what we feel. The British man picks up the phone and dials a hotel. He asks for a particular room number. Hoskins tells us that it's hard to talk with a stiff upper lip. Over the phone, the man asks his wife Barbara to come back home from her conference. He assures that he's not drunk, he just misses her. Hoskins: "It's good to talk".
